Laws may prohibit texting and calling patients

The ADA Center for Professional Success offers tips on texting and calling patients and information on federal laws that may prohibit such acts.

Dentists may need to obtain written consent and take other steps to avoid liability and penalties under federal laws like the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. The laws were created so consumers wouldn't receive unwanted communications, such as telemarketing calls, but the laws may prevent dentists from using traditional methods to contact their patients.

Dental practices are among the businesses that have already been sued for violating these laws. Individuals can sue for up to $1,500 for every phone call or text that violates the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
