Course Description (Lecture Style Webinar)
This course provides an introduction to dental sleep medicine. Doctors will be taken on a journey from what sleep apnea is and how it affects patients to how to screen and talk to patients about this condition. It will end with how obstructive sleep apnea is treated both through oral appliance therapy and through referrals to sleep physicians for other treatment modalities. By the end of this course, doctors will feel comfortable screening their patients for possible sleep disordered breathing and will be able to help their patients get the treatment they deserve to achieve a healthier, happier life.
1. Examine the importance of sleep.
2. Examine the different types of sleep related breathing disorders.
3. Examine OSA and its impact on patients.
4. Know different modalities used to treat OSA.
5. Establish an effective screening process for patients.
6. Know how to provide effective physician referrals to help patients get further screening.
Instructor(s): Dr. Ashley Spooner
Dr. Ashley Spooner is the owner and general dentist/dental sleep medicine provider of Falcon Park Dental Group. She graduated from University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. She is also a Physician Builder for Epic Electronic Health Record system and is collaborating with Epic, Dental, and Medical providers in an effort to develop a medical record system that is both efficient and comprehensive for both patients and providers. Her focus is Dental-Medical Integration with an emphasis on comprehensive medical histories and the ability for all providers to communicate efficiently and seamlessly in order to help patients get the comprehensive care they deserve in a timely manner. Dr. Spooner and the providers at Falcon Park Dental Group are committed to providing premium quality care through not only continually educating themselves, but their patients to help them understand how the mouth is a part of the body and dental and sleep health are imperative for overall health.
