The Virginia Dental Association is sharing its Find a Dentist online search tool, following news that SmileDirectClub has wound down its global operations, effective immediately. With two million customers having used its aligner product, SmileDirectClub announced its closure last Friday after filing for bankruptcy in September.
The ADA Find a Dentist resource allows people to search for nearby dentists by specialty, including orthodontics, and is managed by the American Dental Association.
The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to create a healthy bite – straight teeth that properly meet opposing teeth in the opposite jaw. Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, interception, guidance and correction of bad bites.
“Virginia-licensed providers are trained to create a healthier bite making it easier to chew, speak and smile,” said VDA President Dr. Dustin Reynolds, D.D.S., M.S. “For patients seeking orthodontic care, many providers offer affordable and flexible payment options.”
Correcting a problem can create a nice-looking smile, but more importantly, orthodontic treatment results in a healthier mouth. Not correcting an abnormal bite could result in further oral health problems, including:
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Tooth loss
- Affected speech and/or chewing
- Abnormal wear to tooth enamel
- Jaw problems
