An ADA Health Policy Institute study examined trends in migration of dentists from 2019-2022 and found Virginia to be among the top states for net in-migration of early career dentists. Virginia saw a slight net out-migration of dentists with more than ten years of experience in the same time period.
Virginia saw the 6th highest number of net new dentists moving into the state, with 72 more new dentists moving in than leaving. On a percentage basis, the 5.2% increase ranks Virginia 12th among states.
Among dentists with more than ten years of experience, Virginia saw a slight out-migration, with 21 more of those dentists leaving the Commonwealth than moving to Virginia, a 0.6% decrease.
