Halloween Season is Here: Virginia Dentists Offer Oral Health Tips
Trick-or-treaters are in luck: 85% of Americans say they’ll celebrate Halloween by passing out chocolate and candy this year.
Adults will get into the action too, with 83% of parents admitting to sneaking candy from their children’s trick-or-treat haul, according to the National Confectioners Association poll.
As families get ready for trick-or-treating activities, Virginia dentists are sharing tips to avoid Halloween candy-induced cavities.
While candy in moderation isn’t always bad, too much candy, too often can lead to cavity concerns. Dentists with the Virginia Dental Association recommend the following oral health tips when eating Halloween candy this year:
- Brush your teeth or swish your mouth with water after a treat
- Don’t consume candy throughout the day; save it for a treat after a meal
- Avoid sticky or sour candies
- Look for dark chocolates that are lower in sugar
- Don’t keep a stash of candy on hand; Have your family pick their favorites and donate the rest
“We want everyone to have a happy Halloween, while taking care of their oral health,” said Dr. Marcel G. Lambrechts Jr., Virginia Dental Association president. “Candy in small amounts, alongside healthy habits, is the best way to protect smiles. And remember: Be kind and give your parents a few pieces.”
As the holidays approach, the VDA encourages parents and kids alike to schedule preventative dental care appointments now to maintain optimal oral health.
The best way to maintain oral health is good habits at home and regular preventative dental visits.
